University web marketing and usability

About

I work as a web coordinator for three very different faculties at a university in Sydney. This is my story...

Archive for October, 2006

Collegewebeditor found a very interesting survey result paper on information-seeking behaviour of high-school students (8 page pdf). It’s quite an interesting read, and certainly makes a lot of sense.
Admittedly, the study was conducted in the United States, and I am not entirely sure how accurate it might display the Australian market, but some things surprised me […]

Faculty meeting today

Friday, October 27th, 2006

After the launch of the new HSS web site last Monday, and a quite demanding flood of emails right afterwards (over 300 now, and counting), we decided to officially introduce academic and administrative staff to the site.
I get a huge thrill out of speaking in front of crowds, so I jumped at the chance, and […]

Word of mouth strategies

Friday, October 27th, 2006

I just found a link to an interesting article on “word of mouth” marketing in the erelevant blog. Although in a few places, the article sounds probably a little bit too idealistic, I think it is still very relevant for Australian universities! Most of the local students (ie Australian students at an Australian university) at […]

Still looking for people in my field

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I have now spent several nights roaming through the web, looking for people who might have similar blogs to mine, but for some reason I just can’t find any. Am I the only university employee who wants to share experience in his field? Or am I unknowingly breaking several laws, and it’s one of these […]

I just wrote my disclaimer

Friday, October 20th, 2006

I am always trying to take things on board that other people tell me, so lo and behold, my very own Disclaimer, not because I think it’s fancy, but rather because I might have to.

Positive office politics

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Over the last few days, I tried to find blog entries around the world about office politics, and approximately 95% of them were absolutely negative! “I hate office politics”, or “…and then this stupid moron got the project because of office politics” and so on. Although I knew beforehand that most people despised office politics, […]

On Monday, we launched the new Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences web site!
UTS: Humanities and Social Sciences
We started as early in the morning as we could, also choosing the Monday because it would give us 5 potential days to fix the biggest problems that might occur. We started the whole process of transfering the […]

Category types of meetings

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

I just left a 45-very-intensive-minutes meeting with an academic and one of my supervisors. It was interesting for me because I realised some time in the past that those meetings all seem to fall in only a couple of different categories:
1.) Enthusiastic and thorough
Clients of this category love the idea of getting material on the […]

About to go live

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I have been working on a web site for a faculty for almost 1 full year now, 11 months to be exact, and Monday next week, it will go live. Almost unreal…
With our current set-up, and especially due to an abundance of legacy system (thanks, predecessor), I anticipate a bumpy ride, and it is quite […]
